The interior of a village store in Tambunum village, PNG, ca. 1988. Although made from local building materials and in some ways modeled on residences, storekeepers also try to create a milieu for shopping: a counter for orders and goods displayed on shelves, much as in town. A customer has to enter and hand over money to the owner before receiving goods, although many ask to buy on credit (dinau). Eric Silverman, 2014.
